Allakhazam.com E3 Coverage:
Exclusive Pirates of the Caribbean Preview
header imageThe Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is set to take off this summer. With the new movie, Dead Man's Chest and games coming out on multiple systems, it's going to be hard to miss. One of the biggest games that will be coming out is Pirates of the Caribbean Online. We had the opportunity to sit down with Mike Goslin, Vice President of the VR Studio at Disney Online to see the game, and talk a bit about it.
The first thing that is clearly noticeable is this game is not the typical MMORPG. The only other game Disney Online has worked on is Toontown, a game targeted at younger players. Mike made clear from the very start that Pirates of the Caribbean (PoTCO) is aimed toward the mass market. Like Toontown, PoTCO will run on almost any hardware configuration. To run PoTCO, all the player needs is 256 megs of ram, a 32 meg video card, and a dial-up connection As you can expect, even at the highest settings Pirates of the Caribbean is not the most graphically impressive game, but what it lacks in pure aesthetics it makes up for in style. The world, which is based off the first, second, and next year's third movie, is huge. Mike said that the world should support between fifty and one hundred thousand players concurrently, but the world will include some types of instancing.
New players start out in a cell with none other than Jack Sparrow. Jack will teach you the basics of the game, and will throw you right into the experience. When asked if other characters will make an appearance, Mike said they will, and frequently. Notoriety is a huge factor in Pirates of the Caribbean. The #1 goal is to become the most infamous pirate in the Caribbean. The ways to do this will vary, but your characters level, skills, and PvP achievements will factor in. In addition, a leader board of sorts will be in place so you can show off to everyone else in the world.
Instead of the typical party in MMORPGs, players will be grouping up to control a ship. Ship control, which is fast and almost arcade like, is extremely fun, and ships can go as large as 10 people per ship, though 4-8 is the normal. As of this demo, players can take one of two roles on the ship. One person will captain the ship, controlling the ship entirely, while others take on the cannons. Once a ship is engaged, the canon fight begins. Ship damage is completely realistic. If you want to slow the enemy down, you can fire burning shots which burn the enemy's sails, or even better, fire chain shot which can severely hurt or destroy the masts of the ship. All canon fire is done through a first-person interface, and accuracy is important. Players cannot only hurt the ship, they can also fire upon other players on the ship and knock them off into the water.
Melee combat can take place on ships or on land, and is also quite interesting. Players will have access to seven types of weapons, and 3 types of "voodoo curses". Each of these weapons has different styles, and performs differently under specific circumstances; so much so that you can only choose 3 weapons or curses to bring with you in a party, so balancing the party is key. Combat is fairly action-oriented. Close-combat melee is fast paced, and combos seem important. Ranged combat is 3rd person over-the-shoulder shooting, with an importance placed on aiming. Curses seem to work like magic, with one twist. To curse an enemy you have to run out and pull out a piece of its hair, and then you can curse it from almost any distance. Overall, Pirates of the Caribbean seems to be shaping up like a great title. Hardcore World of Warcraft raiders might not like it, but with the license and the broad-appeal, in one year we might be seeing a new king in the MMORPG realm. We would like to thank Mike Goslin and everyone at Disney Online for giving us the tour and talking about the game with us. Be sure to check back here at the Zam Network for more information about Pirates of the Caribbean Online.

World of WarCraft: The Burning Crusade Marches On
header imageAfter a long day of work at E3 when 4:00 rolls around you're generally ready to head off. Wednesday for OGaming was different – we had an appointment to see World of Warcraft's next expansion and patch. Judging by the surreal number of people crowding around Blizzard's E3 outpost in the West Hall we have to say it's likely the most popular software booth in the entire show, second only to the giants at Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony.
Once we got situated in a private screening room we met up with Lee Sparks, a Producer at Blizzard tasked on the upcoming World of WarCraft Burning Crusade expansion. Our tour started with the biggest news that has come out of E3 – the new race. The Draenei were the long-rumored Alliance race for The Burning Crusade, but it was only just confirmed today. The first thing longtime players of WoW will notice is the completely new and much more human-like Draenei models. Gone are the models currently in the game, replaced by models that look similar to Night Elves in many ways. Their new home area is Azuremyst Isles, just south of Teldrassil, complete with a new, semi-futuristic forest theme, which revolves around the Draenei trying to escape Draenor and crash landing on this island. Next we saw a few features everyone had already seen from Blizzcon, including the Blood Elves, their starting areas and playing area (with newly created maps), and a quick look through the lands.
One of the more intriguing areas we saw was the Hellfire Peninsula, the first area after crossing the Dark Portal. This zone is for players of about level 55-62, basically to get used to the new feel of the expansion. The zone is very red, similar to Badlands, but also has huge chunks of earth floating above. Level 56 monsters roam at the entrance of the zone, and increase further in – past both Horde and Alliance bases. While running through Hellfire Peninsula we had the opportunity to see the new flying epic mount. This mount requires level 70, will be faster than the Epic Mount, and will allow the player to reach areas that normally would be inaccessible on foot. Flight works similar to swimming, and one very cool feature is if you run off a cliff while on the ground, you'll automatically take flight. Another new feature with the expansion will be socketed items. If you've played Diablo 2 these items are very similar. Each "gem" can be socketed into an item, which has free sockets – the weapon we saw had 3 different slots. Each gem adds a small bonus. In addition to the small bonus, you'll be able to create a set – gems will be different colors. One example we saw was if the player had 4 blue gems socketed into items equipped on the player, they would receive +12 strength.
Finally, we saw some of the instances in the expansion. First we saw the very first instance players will encounter in the expansion, Hellfire Citadel. Inside is scattered with hordes of fel orcs, enemies of both Alliance and Human races. This instance will feature 4 different wings, 3 of which are 5 men wings, and one raid wing. Each wing will be quite long, and will save a parties process. The dungeon ranges from level 60-70. The final instance we saw was the Cavern of Time. This instance, designed for level 60-70, allows players to travel back to important times in Warcraft history and relive them. One example we saw was the final fight from Warcraft 3, Mount Hyjal. This instance will allow players to take part in the fight – and is extremely visually impressive, with huge cliffs and epic paths. This zone is being aimed at level 60-70.
Our time at Blizzard sated our appetite for more information, and while many of our questions where met with a swift "This has not been decided upon yet", it's obvious the expansion is making fantastic progress. Stay tuned on the new Zam Network for the latest news and information surrounding World of Warcraft and the Burning Crusade expansion!

Allakhazam E3 2006 Best of Show Award
header imageE3 2006 was a ton of fun - and for fans of Persistant Worlds it was the best, with over 50 different titles being shown. It's really hard to narrow it down and say what game you thought was the best, but the staff of Allakhazam and OGaming has done so.

Best of Show - Gods & Heroes
Developer: Perpetual Entertainment
Publisher: Sony Online Entertainment
ETA: Q4 2006

E3 2006 presented us with an intriguing glimpse into the future of the MMO genre. Funcom teased us with a stellar demonstration of Age of Conan's cutting edge graphics engine and a unique approach to combat. Flying Labs and Disney both struck original cords with their respective Pirate MMOs. Blizzard reminded us why World of WarCraft has been such a phenomenal success with a great showing of their upcoming first expansion pack for the mega-hit. However, one persistent world stood out of the rest this year and captured our imaginations in terms of development progress and innovation.

We're pleased to announce that this year's Best of Show award goes to Perpetual Entertainment for their showing of Gods and Heroes.

Perpetual's original vision of ancient Rome splices mythological lore with history. Gods and Heroes hones in on several compelling game elements - such as a very refined squad-based combat system, evolving game plot lines and the influence of patron gods and goddesses on characters. Along with a very polished build of the client, we're absolutely convinced that this title will be one of the heavy contenders in the upcoming months.

Gods and Heroes Preview
header image In a market dominated by cutesy Elves and Orcs, it was damn good to see that Perpetual's upcoming Gods and Heroes break the mold. Set before Rome became the sprawling empire depicted in Gladiator and HBO's Rome, Gods and Heroes blends a liberal dose of history and mysticism to create a world truly original. Perpetual President Chris McKibbin, accompanied by Lead Game Designer Stieg Hedlund (who you may remember as Diablo 2's lead designer), took us on a tour of their version of Rome.

E3 by way of Lord of the Rings Online
header imageIt's another hazy day in Los Angeles. The L.A. Convention Center looms into view from behind dusty brick buildings standing sentry-like in the middle of down-town; the white of the Convention Center Complex in dull contrast to the ashen skies. In fact, we may as well be in Centralia, Pennsylvania there is so much low-hanging grey. But who's concerned about the weather when we are on our way to E3 2006? Today's quest will take us indoors into a public dungeon, and its definitely going to be a long day.

Booth Babes: an E3 Editorial (w/ pictures!)
header imageThis years E3 Expo was marked by a increase in "Morality."

In an article posted on Wired.com in January (http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,70075-0.html) notes that Vendors were warned about scantly clad “booth babes” by the ESA (Entertainment Software Association).
Rules prohibiting the use of scantily clad young women to peddle video games are nothing new, but the handbook for this year's show in May outlines tough new penalties, including a $5,000 fine on the spot for the booth owner if the "booth babe" is semi-clad.

Of course this was met with a furious blast from the gaming community.

Comics, articles, and even one call to boycott E3 came in the wake.

Of course my first thought was "We are here for the games. Does it really matter how the girls look?"
